Pictorial essay: Vienna vignettes!

Reflections: Leopold Museum - ‘Vienna 1900: Birth of Modernism’

‘Vienna 1900 - Birth of Modernism’ at the Leopold Museum plays out a range of exhibitions that provide insights into the ‘Danube metropolis the capital of both nobility and liberal intellectuals, of the splendid Ringstrasse and endless slum areas, of anti semitism and Zionism, of a rigid conservatism and emerging Modernism’ In this milieu the artists on show challenged conventional and traditional thinking, linking their art to the changing nature of society, mores, psychology and philosophy. The founding of the Vienna Secession in 1897, a move away from the conservative Kunstlerhaus marked the beginning of Austrian modernism. Among the featured artists are Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. In a separate exhibition we experience the works of Max Oppenheimer and Gabriele Muenter an extraordinary journey through their individual but also collectives lives and times.
