Frigiliana is one of the ‘white villages’ in which three cultures converge - Jewish, Muslim and Christian. However it remains to day the most Moorish of all towns in the province of Axarquia.
It was in the 9th and 10th century that its Arabic urban design can be experienced today and celebrated. In the 15th century the arrival of the Catholic Monarchs witnessed the start of a repressive campaign against the Moriscos for conversion to Christianity.
Despite attempts at overthrowing the Catholic regime including the Battle of El Penon in Frigiliana, in which 7000 Moriscos did, their resistance was defeated. Today Frigiliana celebrates in August the Festival of Three Cultures in what is regarded as Spain’s most beautiful and well-preserved village.
