The Tempest at CentreCentro

To experience “The Tempest” by Spanish artist Avelino Sala is an ‘exercise in critical and poetic resistance’. Born in 1972 Sala is an artist and editor of the magazine Sublime and is one of Spain’s leading figures in the use of art as a vehicle for resistance.

‘In his work there is a sort of poetry which reflects on the powers of the state and the control they exercise. His recognisable aesthetic strengthens a discourse as necessary as it is powerful, touching on sensitive and relevant themes such as migration, contemporary dislocation, the environmental crisis and the paradoxes of capitalism’.

The power of his work draws one back through the exhibition to reflect again on the work and to realise its artistic and political  power.

The days and weeks we have been In Madrid we have been drawn to explore the past, the present and the future in relation to Spain and the wider world.

It has been uplifting to know that in Spain we have artists and dare I say political leaders and parties who stand for morality and fairness in a world that seems on a pathway to despair and destruction.
