Spring Time has sprung in London but not in Westminster!
The good news is that the ‘beast from north’ is abating and today the sun shines and the winter chill is lifting. The daffodils and blossoms will continue to bloom having taking time out. So why has it been so cold? https://bbc.in/4b2MRhO
But the winter of discontent still lingers for the Conservative Government with the unelected Peers in the House of Lords opposing the Rwanda Solution to send refugees back to where they came from metaphorically speaking some of the gloom lifted. The House of Lords peers was made to look good in contrast to the Conservative Government led by PM Rishi Sunak.
However they unfortunately blinked first after a threat by the PM not to let them home and to bed until they passed the legislation. Such are the peers’ principles who sit in the House of Lords. Still we can’t be critical of a ‘close the borders’ approach to refugees and asylum seekers!
But back when London was so grey and cold we arrived! It was quite a shock leaving the ‘white’ warm village of Frigiliana, Spain to arrive and being shuffled off the plane at Heathrow via a staircase and on to a crowded bus. Maybe that explains why there are so many Brits hanging out on the Costa del Sol though I bet they now regret their Brexit.
‘Stop the boats’ has become a catch cry of the Conservative Government. It is somewhat ironic that Britannia who once ruled the waves now sees those waves as a threat.
The Rwanda solution, to metaphorically send them back to where they came from, is a last ditch attempt to look like a ‘government’ in control…….of its borders. Maybe that’s some consolation as it’s unable to rule itself or the country. The problem with the ‘solution’ is that most if not all those desperately taking to ‘boats’ are unaware of the ‘Rwanda solution’.
But given the turmoil in the Government, Rishi Sunak may not last the final months before the election. A Tory MP’s decision to move to the cross bench and support Labor in its work to improve the NHS maybe the final straw for an increasing number of Tories. And the local council elections this week may well be the final straw in the future of the PM as Conservative MPs consider their own futures .
But die hard Laborites are not counting their win! It’s been a decade since Labor occupied the government benches and with ‘New Labor’ still reverberating through Labor ranks the nervousness is palpable.
And some would say Starmer is not a Corbyn whose policy platform was and is still needed to dig the UK out of its depressing and depressive state. The state of the NHS, education, social housing, welfare support, action on climate change and the fundamental failure to address inequality and social justice for all has diminished under successive Conservative Governments post Brexit and their inept leaders.
